Exams in or into Nigerian universities nowadays are as challenging and competitive as Royal Rumble, as it requires candidates to be academically tight and spiritually nice, that doesn’t sound like a game for the weak I guess. He who knows the proper route is considered brilliant, they say, that’s a very correct statement in cases like this, though not fully dependent as it should be considered obsolete when thinking goes wide.
In this article, we are going to consider just 4 of the numerous tactics to score high marks in exams. When I say “High”, it’s definitely pointing at a score close to or higher than 75% of total possible result, though to some, even 40% is something to pop champagne about, all is well, just sit back and read along the 4 tactics to score high in Exams.
MAKE PAST QUESTIONS YOUR BEST MATE AND TEACHER
This is the best bet when it comes to preparation for exams, it might save you a whole lots of time reading a very huge textbook aimlessly, thereby going off point by covering a syllabus you wouldn’t even need in 10years time.
Past questions give you an insight on the nature of questions and how the exam you are preparing for will most probably look like. Put yourself in the exam condition and attempt to solve some of the questions, if you are unable to attempt and get any of the questions correctly, give yourself a hard knock or better still, kneel down and pray to your dear God. But mostly, you will be able to attempt few, if not much of the questions, then check up the difficult topics in a recommended text material. By doing this, you will discover that you have actually covered a lot more than you expected.
NOTE : Reading and understanding past questions is quite different from cramming them, as its no guarantee that same questions will be repeated, although at times, it happens.
According to sources “Delsu has over 214 repeated questions in only its POST UTME Use of English from 2006 to 2013″… “UNILAG repeated almost the same questions of previous year in its CIL301 2010 exam”… The result is similar to other schools.
JOIN GROUP DISCUSSIONS
This goes a very long way in helping students, especially if you are the type that doesn’t have the ability to read for a long period. Educational arguments and quiz related to the exam you are preparing for will surprise your brain when it keeps pouring it all down it the exam hall. Research says “Students have the ability to assimilate more in a friendly discussion or somehow argumentative environment”. This is so true, Imagine me tearing you a hot friendly slap jokingly or calling you “olodo” all because you didn’t know the chemical formula of Hydrochloric Acid, then I later corrected you, the only reason why you won’t remember if you were to be asked in the exam is if your brain is in its fallow period, trust me this is a very good tactic you should try out.
KEEP CALM IN THE EXAM HALL
Being shaky in the exam hall is a deadly factor that can affect a student’s result. It is caused by a lot of reasons, some of which are :
Being poorly prepared, why wouldn’t you?.
Bad experience in a previous exam, for instance, a course carried over.
Being a perfectionist – anything less than an A grade is a failure, why worry about that? If what you have to offer is sure enough for an A grade, you will get it.
Not feeling too well, on medication, or pressed – Pressed?? Why would you eat hot beans before an exam? Visit the toilet before the commencement.
Being generally anxious, worried.
I need not go into details of the aforementioned, in case you have just sat down in the exam hall and you feel your panic starting to develop; Make yourself comfortable, check that you are not too hot or too cold. adjust your swag, crack boring jokes reasonably to ease yourself, take a few deep breaths and sighs to reduce tension. Sit with your eyes closed for a little while. Then and only then, turn over the exam paper. That’s the trick!
IN EVERYTHING YOU DO TRUST GOD
Lastly and most importantly, avoiding stories and diving straight to the point, Confess this prayer excerpt before the exam :
Dear Lord, as I take this exam, I thank you that my value is not based on my performance, but on your great love for me.
Thank you for the many talents and gifts you have
given me and for the opportunity of education.
Come into my heart so that we can walk through this time together.
Help me, not only with this exam, but the many challenges of life that are sure to come my way.
As I take this exam, bring back to my mind everything I studied and be gracious with what I have overlooked.
Help me to remain focused and calm, confident in the facts and in my ability,
and firm in the knowledge that no matter what happens today you are there with me.
Amen
